Youth Diversion Team
Westbrook’s Youth Diversion Team offers a community-based alternative to the juvenile court system for young residents who are first or second time offenders.
About the Youth Diversion Team:
The Youth Diversion Team (YDT) is a diversion program that utilizes a restorative justice approach to repair harm in a collaborative process between the youth, their family, and the team.
The team is composed of Westbrook Youth and Family Services staff, police officers, school personnel, and community members.
The YDT offers an opportunity to prevent youth involvement in the formal juvenile court system, instead redirecting them toward community-based support and supervision.
Who is eligible?
Westbrook residents aged 10 - 17
First or second nonviolent offenses
No open or pending court cases
Parents/guardians must be willing to participate in the process
How does referral work?
Referral to the Westbrook YDT can be made by police or schools. The referring agency will inform the family of an opportunity for diversion, and provide information about the YDT program. The family may sign a waiver for the referring agency to exchange case information with the Westbrook YDT.
The Westbrook YDT will confirm the case is eligible and appropriate for diversion. Upon referral, the family should contact the Westbrook YDT within 48 hours to initiate the intake process.
